Why Gentle beginnings exists

At Millennium Minis, our Greenwich SE10 nursery supports babies from 3 months onwards with a calm, structured and emotional responsive settling in approach. For families searching for a baby nursery in Greenwich that prioritises attachment, communication and flexibility, Gentle Beginnings provides a thoughtful and reassuring start.

Many families in the SE10 community are returning to work earlier than they may have anticipated, often while living away from extended family support and navigating feeding, sleep, and emotional well-being for the first time. For many parents, this transition can feel overwhelming and emotionally complex, particularly when balancing work commitments with the desire to ensure their baby feels safe, secure, and nurtured.

Gentle Beginnings was created in response to these realities. It recognises that the start of nursery life is not simply a logistical change, but a significant emotional transition for both babies and their families. Our approach is designed to remove unnecessary pressure during this period, replacing it with structure, consistency, and thoughtful care that follows each baby’s individual pace.

By prioritising emotional security, strong attachments, and responsive care from the outset, Gentle Beginnings supports babies to develop trust in their environment and the adults around them. This calm and considered approach helps lay the foundations for well-being, confidence, and learning as children begin their nursery journey.

Who is gentle beginnings for

Gentle Beginnings is designed to support families who value a calm, respectful, and child-centred approach to the early years, particularly during the earliest stages of nursery life.

This approach is especially beneficial for:

• First-time parents who may be navigating separation, routines, and early childcare decisions for the first time.

• Working parents returning to work who want reassurance that their baby’s emotional needs are prioritised alongside practical care.

• Families without nearby support networks who value consistent communication and guidance.

• Parents seeking professional, consistent, and responsive care that adapts to their child rather than expecting the child to adapt too quickly. By working closely in partnership with families, Gentle Beginnings ensures that parents feel informed, supported, and confident, while babies experience a smooth, secure, and emotionally supported transition into nursery life.

Our approach recognises that strong early relationships and emotional security are central to children’s development and long-term well-being.

Phased Beginnings - (baby led settling)

We recognise that every baby experiences separation differently, and that settling into nursery is a significant emotional transition for both children and parents. Our phased beginnings approach is carefully planned to follow each baby’s individual pace, ensuring that they feel safe, secure, and emotionally supported from the very start.

Before full days begin, we offer a minimum of five complementary settling-in sessions, allowing babies to gradually build familiarity with the environment, routines, and the adults caring for them. These sessions are unhurried and responsive, giving babies time to explore, observe, and form early attachments without pressure or expectation.

Where needed, we extend settling-in beyond the initial phase, adapting attendance patterns, and routines in partnership with parents. This flexible approach helps reduce anxiety, supports emotional well-being, and ensures that transitions are led by the child’s readiness rather than fixed timescales. Our aim is that every baby begins nursery feeling calm, confident, and genuinely settled.

One consistent key person

From the outset, each baby is supported by a consistent key person who leads their settling-in process and remains central to their daily experience. This familiar adult builds a secure attachment with the child, providing emotional reassurance, predictable routines, and sensitive responses to their individual cues.

The key person works closely with parents to understand each baby’s needs, routines, and comfort strategies from home. They take responsibility for communication during the early weeks, sharing observations, progress, and any adjustments being made to support the child’s well-being.

Our team are trained in early attachment, baby development, and responsive care. Consistency in care allows babies to feel understood and safe, supporting emotional regulation, confidence, and early learning as they transition into nursery life.

Feeding - respectful Care

We understand that feeding is a deeply personal and important part of a baby’s routine and emotional security. Our approach to feeding is respectful, flexible, and guided by each family’s preferences, ensuring continuity between home and nursery.

We confidently support breastfeeding, expressed milk, formula feeding, and combination feeding, without pressure to change what works best for each child. Feeding routines are followed closely, and babies are fed responsively, with practitioners attentive to hunger cues, comfort, and individual needs.

We follow evidence-based guidance from The Lullaby Trust to support safe sleep and breastfeeding practices within our nursery. This guidance is used alongside statutory requirements and Ofsted expectations, and helps shape our everyday practice, ensuring babies are cared for in a way that is safe, responsive and supportive of families. We also make an annual donation to the Lullaby Trust as a small way of supporting the valuable work they do for babies and parents across the UK. https://www.lullabytrust.org.uk

Weaning: We support a range of weaning approaches, including baby-led weaning, traditional purées, and a gentle hybrid of the two. We always follow each family’s preferences and work closely with parents to ensure consistency between home and nursery.

When children are starting solids, we take a responsive, child-led approach, supporting their individual stage of development and readiness. Our nursery mirrors weaning practices used at home wherever possible, and our daily menu typically offers a thoughtful mix of smooth purées alongside age-appropriate soft finger foods, allowing children to explore textures safely and confidently.

Extra Reassurance

At millennium minis. we know that reassurance is especially important during the early stages of nursery life. Clear, honest, and regular communication is central to our approach, helping parents feel informed, confident, and involved in their child’s experience.

Through the early settling in stage, parents receive regular daily updates from their child’s key person, including how their baby is settling, feeding, sleeping and engaging throughout the day via our ParentZone app.

As children become more settled and confident, daily communication continues, with updates naturally becoming more focused on feeding, sleeping and nappy changes. Photographs may be shared less frequently as routines establish, however parents are always kept fully informed and reassured, with a daily verbal handover at collection so parents can hear about how their child’s day has been and celebrate their progress.

Where adjustments are needed, these are discussed openly and sensitively, with changes made in partnership with families.

This additional layer of support remains in place for as long as it is needed, ensuring parents feel fully confident that their child is happy, secure, and emotionally settled before moving forward with greater independence.

We will also be introducing baby massage and baby yoga soon.

Baby yoga and massage offer a calm, nurturing way to support babies physical development, emotional wellbeing and early relationships. delivered gently and responsively, these sessions become a special part of a baby’s routine, helping them feel relaxed, secure and understood.

Through slow movements, stretches and soothing touch, baby yoga supports the development of strength, flexibility and coordination, while also encouraging balance.   Massage helps babies relax, supports circulation and digestion, and can be particularly beneficial for babies who experience restlessness, wind or discomfort. Being talked through each movement and touch also strengthens babies early communication skills, as they begin to recognise tone, rhythm and familiar voices.

We are very excited to provide this service very soon within our nursery as part of our Gentle Beginnings Pathway.
